MacGyver's Challenge
This is a section of the site I've been thinking about adding for some time now. I hope to add new entries here whenever I can and it will be like a MacGyver column in a newspaper. I've always enjoyed MacGyver for the great action and adventure as well as his daring escapes. And there's also great scientific knowledge that can be gleaned from the show. I also totally agree with his stance against drinking, drugs, smoking, and guns. I also love the fact that after the first season, MacGyver doesn't curse at all. While not perfect, because even MacGyver had his flaws, he still presents a good role model for people today. I think there are many Christian principles that can be found in different episodes of the show. This is what I hope to explore in what I would like to be maybe at least a monthly column. Honestly, it will probably be updated whenever I can, and I don't know what that will be like with my schedule. Recently, a new Bible study has been gaining popularity. You can go to your local Christian bookstore and find TV show based Bible studies that use episodes of television shows to demonstrate Biblical principles. Bible studies like this exist for "The Andy Griffith Show", "The Beverly Hillbillies", "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and even "Bonanza"! I wouldn't be suprised if more were on the way. You can think of this column as the MacGyver Bible Study! Being a Christian myself, I am interested in exploring some of the Biblical values MacGyver espouses in many episodes. I think it will be interesting. I have called it "MacGyver's Challenge" mainly because I think MacGyver does issue a challenge to viewers. The challenge is to follow the good example you have seen and go and do likewise. I love entertainment for entertainment's sake as well as anyone, but I think television should also be capable of offering entertainment and edification. I think television shows should offer encouragement to keep doing the right thing and it should inspire positive Christian values in people. That's the challenge. Anyway, I guess that about wraps up my introduction. If you have any comments about the column, feel free to send them via the Feedback page. If you don't agree with my beliefs or find something here offensive (or the very notion of a MacGyver Bible study offensive), don't feel compelled to read it. As J.R.R. Tolkien said, "I am a Christian and what I write will be essentially from that viewpoint." However, if you are interested in The Bible and Jesus's death on the cross and resurrection, feel free to ask about that or check out this site that explains the beliefs of Christianity and the simple plan of salvation that God has made available to everyone. And with that said, enjoy the column!
