Merchandise

There was not much merchandise made for MacGyver in the U.S. Most of the MacGyver items that were created were made overseas, in England, Brazil, Japan, and Germany, France and possibly other European countries. All of the items on this page are officially licensed items (to the best of my knowledge). I have seen other items that seem to be made unofficially and are unlicensed. I will list them on the Fanwork page.

MacGyver Toys

Glasslite toys

Ja-Ru toys

Bernabeu Gisbert toy(s)

Toy Machine Guns

- (Amazingly enough, these toys were made and licensed for MacGyver, even though we all know MacGyver hates guns. They are 17.5 inches long and are made by a Spanish company called Bernabeu Gisbert. It is actually billed on the package as "metralleta con sonido", which in English translates to "submachine gun with sound." They were probably made early on to promote the show before they knew what kind of hero MacGyver was going to be.)

Josca toy(s)

Motorcycle

A company called Josca (presumably based in Argentina or at least that's where the toy was circulated) released this MacGyver motorcycle. It is unknown to me if there were any accompanying action figures or toys to go with it.

MacGyver Books

MacGyver on Ice by Mark Daniel (The book is copyrighted 1986, but it was published on July 30, 1987 by Armada in the United Kingdom) (Check out Amazon.co.uk's page for it here. It's 128 pages long according to their site (that listing probably includes the title page though- the actual text is only 126 pages long) and the ISBN number for it is 0006927335)
(Published in hardback on July 30, 1987 and in paperback on September 1, 1987 in Canada. Apparently there was both a hardcover and paperback copy available, and they were published by HarperCollins Publishers in Canada, at least according to the listing on Amazon's Canada site. I would assume there would have been a UK hardcover edition as well. Go to the book's page on Canada's Amazon.ca or Amazon.com's US page or search Abebooks.com for a used copy. It also pops up on Ebay from time to time.) And check out this brief review of the book by Books for Keeps, as well as an article there that makes a quick mention of it as being one of a school library's more well-read books.

Review of book

List of "MacGyverisms" from book

Both these next books are in French and contain pictures and biographies of MacGyver and its stars. The "MacGyver: Richard Dean Anderson" book is 155 pages long and was published on April 24, 1991. The ISBN number is 2907763288 or the newer 13 digit ISBN 978-2907763288. (This seems to be a book in a series of books entitled "Stars a la Une". The literal translation in English is "Front Page Stars", as near as I can tell.) Both books were published by Editions Sévigny. The "L'Integrale MacGyver" book was published on December 6, 1991 and has 128 pages. The ISBN number is 290776330X or the newer 13 digit ISBN 978-2907763301. It also seems to be part of a series called "Sevigny Stars 1". According to Amazon.fr's page, the publisher is listed as Rosea Sevigny. This book contains 17 full page color photos, 24 full page black and white photos, 15 plus 4.5 x 7 inch black and white photos, as well as a small photo on the bottom of many of the pages. The book also has descriptions of the major characters like MacGyver, Pete Thornton, Jack Dalton, Murdoc, etc. as well as biographies for the main stars, the French premiere dates, and an episode guide for episodes 1-126. Judging from the date of publishing, it seems like it probably covered Season 1-6, with maybe a preview of Season 7 episodes. The book itself measures 8 x 11 inches. Check for used copies at Canada's Amazon.ca or France's Amazon.fr.

John Rich has been a director and producer on many classic television shows like "Gunsmoke", "Bonanza", "The Dick Van Dyke Show", "Gilligan's Island", "The Brady Bunch", "All in the Family", "The Jeffersons", "Maude", "Good Times", "Barney Miller", Newhart", "Benson", and of course - MacGyver! Read all about his days behind the camera in his memoir of his days in Hollywood. The book encompasses many facets of his career and provides some interesting behind-the-scenes information on the making of MacGyver. The book was published by the University of Michigan Press on September 25, 2006. The ISBN number is 0472115782 or 9780472115785, if you prefer. ;-) It's quite cool and makes for an interesting read. Check out a preview through Google's site. Here's Amazon's order link for the book.

Magazines

While there weren't any official MacGyver magazines (at least not to my knowledge:-),MacGyver was featured in magazines like Epi-Log, a magazine that reports on various television shows, usually older, cult classics, along with new ones. It also usually includes an episode guide for the series it covers. MacGyver was featured on the cover of issues 15 and 19.

Here's the cover of a French magazine that did a cover story on MacGyver for its February/March issue in 1991. There's also some more pictures from it below.

Click here to see the cover of the first issue of French magazine Star Club that had a big cover story on MacGyver.

The Hollywood Reporter put out a special 24 page salute to MacGyver in celebration of its 100th. episode in its May 5, 1990 issue. Check out pictures from it below. Also, to see an online version of it, check out this link to Kate's RDA page.

Song Book

The MacGyver theme song is featured in these television theme songs books.

MacGyver Soundtrack

This was released in Germany, probably in around 1985 or so, when the show first came out. On the first picture below, Galaxis seems to be the company that released it. ZYX has also been another company I've found listed as the record label. From what I can tell, it looks like Fox Records rereleased it in 1997. It's also been released again on April 5, 2004 by the Sis/Silver star label. Look at the pictures below to see the differences in the covers. As far as the music goes, only the first track is the actual MacGyver theme song. There are two other tracks that seem to be remixes of the theme song: "MacGyver's War" and the last track, which is a reprise of the first one. The rest have nothing to do with the show, as far as I can tell. Perhaps you can call them tracks "inspired" by the show. For a complete track listing, go to Mika's MacGyver page. To find out more about the composers and to talk with other soundtrack collectors, check out SoundtrackCollector.com's page on the MacGyver soundtrack album. Interesting to note, the web site also lists MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis and MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday on the site, but categorizes the TV-Movies as being unknown as to whether or not any soundtracks were made for them. The MacGyver soundtrack has been available in both CD (compact disc) format and LP (long playing) record format. (The last two pictures are the LP cover and you can even see the vinyl sticking out of the sleeve in the last one. :-)) It's unknown if it was available on 8 track or cassette tape, though I suppose it is possible.

The MacGyver theme song is also available on these albums, most released in the 1990s. The Television's Greatest Hits: Remote Control CD was released in 1996 and the last CD pictured seems to have been released in France in 1990. The run time for the MacGyver theme song on there is 2:05, so perhaps it's a slightly extended version. See the link for further details, including set list.

I've also found a listing on Amazon.co.uk for a MacGyver original TV soundtrack audio CD which was released on March 15, 2004 by the Sis/silver Star label and the ASIN is B0001P4VMW and the catalogue number is SIS10672. "(Artist)" is listed at the artist performing the music. This is a rerelease of the German MacGyver soundtrack CD and not an actual new recording, but either way there are apparently some new and used copies available through the Web site for purchase.

It looks like there was a 45 RPM 7 inch record single released throughout Europe of the MacGyver theme song! I have seen one version released in Belgium, which is pictured below. Side A contains the MacGyver theme song and Side B contains a track called "Mac Attack". It was produced by a company called Cartland in 1991. Also, here's the archived version of the site I found a similar LP single release on. If you can read Italian, maybe you can find out some more about this LP. From what I can tell, it looks like this one was released in France, probably about the same time as the Belgian release and it looks likely that it's the same content. Here's another site listing this release with some more information. It seems this single was also released on LP under the Indisc label in 1991 and I presume distributed throughout Europe. The "Mac Attack" track lists Joachim Sherylee as the music composer and J. Claudel as the lyricist, as near as I can tell. There was also apparently a third release of the same single by the Carrere label in 1990.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo (an African music group that does a lot of cool chants) has a best of album that features a song that was used on the "Black Rhino" episode of MacGyver! The song "Izithembiso Zenkosi" was featured in the episode when MacGyver arrives in Africa and is driving through the land and checking out all the wonderfully beautiful creatures God created! Ladysmith Black Mambazo (whose members by the way, are Christian) also made some cool appearances on Sesame Street, once during the "Put Down the Duckie" song with Ernie and Hoots the Owl, and with Kermit the Frog singing the "African Alphabet"! Here's a picture of the album. Go to Amazon.com to buy a copy of the album!

Though it does not seem to contain the "Tough Boys" rap on the album (unfortunately), if you enjoyed G. Love E's performance on the "Tough Boys" episode of MacGyver, you may like checking out their album, "Chillin' on the G Spot". This seems to be the only album the band released, back on August 21, 1990 from Capitol Records. You can get a copy of the album through Amazon.com or check on Ebay. Here's a track listing.

MacGyver Display Signs

Here's a back lit display sign featuring MacGyver that could be used in a store or a restaurant like Ruby Tuesday's that displays memorabilia from various eras.

MacGyver Trading Cards

These MacGyver trading cards all came with calendars on the back. There were sets made for 1991, 1992, and 1993. They all seem to be printed on 890 Saltpeter Street (Rua da Salitre), in the Algarve region of Portugal.

(Close-up of 1993 cards)

These seem to be from the same set above, except I don't see the Murdoc card in those sets. That one may be from another year. Note that Murdoc is spelt wrong on one card, so these may be fanmade, but they look like they might be from a European or South American set.

Here's a trading card made by TV Week magazine, featuring Richard Dean Anderson as #11 in a set of 24.

MacGyver Stickers

These stickers above were available in 1996 in France from a company called Panini. You may still be able to get them from the Panini Web site. It seems Panini sold its MacGyver album separately and the packets of stickers themselves were also sold separately for one to fill up their album with, in the same manner as stamp collecting. There were 6 stickers to a packet. The book itself is 32 pages and holds possibly as many as 250 3 x 2 inch stickers. Though there may be scenes from other episodes too, Panini's album seems to mainly have shots from "The Gauntlet", "Legend of the Holy Rose" (Parts 1 and 2) and "Good Knight MacGyver" (Parts 1 and 2). Another company, Soracious, apparently based in Portugal, had its own MacGyver sticker album set with collectible stickers measuring about 2 x 2.5 inches that could be bought separately to fill up the album. It seems there were 200 stickers in all for this album, all either portrait shots, behind-the-scene on set shots or action scenes from MacGyver, with captions on them in Portuguese. (It's possible this was also distributed throughout other countries in Europe as well.) And it's copyrighted to Paramount Pictures, 1992. See the pictures of this sticker album below.

Here's pictures of the stickers, as best as I can tell, all from the Panini set.

MacGyver Videos

DVD

In 2005, MacGyver was finally released to DVD! TVshowsonDVD.com reported a January 25, 2005 release for all 22 episodes of Season 1 of MacGyver! Hit the link for more information. The official Season 1 box set from Paramount contains 6 discs, but unfortunately there are no extras. This set comes in full screen 1.33:1 video format. The sound is Dolby Digital English Mono, and is closed captioned for the hearing impaired. (As we know, the first 3 seasons of the show were in mono and only seasons 4-7 were in stereo (where available:-)). The running time is 17 hours, 25 minutes. The list price is $38.99, but you can order the DVD set from Amazon.com for only $27.29! It's about the same at the local Wal-Mart, but they keep spelling MacGyver's name wrong! The schedule for Region 2 (Europe) releases are as follows:
Season 1 - 21st March 2005
Season 2 - 23rd May 2005
Season 3 - 1st August 2005
Season 4 - 3rd October 2005
Season 5 - 7th November 2005
And now it looks like Norway got Season 1 on June 8th, which included many audio tracks and subtitles in various European languages. Check out the beautiful cover art for the Season 1 DVD box set of MacGyver below! Also, take a look below at some of the discs themselves and screen captures from the discs, including a menu screen! Click here to see an early review of the 1st. Season set from DVDTalk.com! Here's another review (this one a bit more positive) for the MacGyver Season 1 DVD set from TVshowsonDVD.com! Check out MacGyver Online's official release pack photos, sent to them by Paramount's media company, as part of the online promotion of the MacGyver Season 1 DVD set. Both MacGyver Online and RDAnderson.com were part of the official promotion of the DVD set, a fact that I find totally cool!

Mac is back! The MacGyver Season 2 DVD set was released on June 7th.!!! Yea!!! It has 22 episodes on 6 discs, like the 1st. Season, coming in at a running time of about 1,200 minutes! Again, there's no extras. You can currently get it from DVDEmpire.com for $27.19 and DVDPlanet.com for $27.97. Check out TVShowsonDVD.com's report for more information. Also, check out this thumbnail view of the Second Season cover art Here's a close up look at TVshowsonDVD.com. And here we have the final cover art, courtesy of TVShowsonDVD.com Note that the hang-gliding picture was replacing with a picture of MacGyver rappelling a cliff.

Take a look at the MacGyver Season 2 DVD packaging at the MacGyver Online site. Paramount went for the 2 disc to a case approach at this point, making the whole package a little more compact. It looks pretty cool!

Take a look at DVD Talk's review of the MacGyver Season 2 DVD set here and take a look at the menu and episode screenshots below.

And here's a look at the MacGyver Season 3 DVD cover art work, courtesy of TVShowsonDVD.com

Amazon.com also has a listing up for the complete series, Seasons 1-7, in one DVD package! Their price is $172.99

Paramount was planning to release MacGyver: The Complete Series in one DVD set, most likely including the two TV-movies, "MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis" and "MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday" on May 22nd of 2007. Check out the cover art here, thanks to TVShowsonDVD.com

Paramount had taken this item off the schedule, but on June 28, 2007 it was announced that the set release date was back on for October 16, 2007!!! This set contains 39 discs, one more than previously released sets combined, and yes, the extra disc contains the TV-movies! ("MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis" and "MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday"). (Unfortunately, there's no other extras included.) Here's a slightly different version of the cover art available too. Check out the Amazon page for a look at the insides and back cover as well.
Amazon.com has this item up for sale right here.

The "Pilot" episode of MacGyver was also included on a "Action Packed" DVD release from CBS/Paramount, supposed to be released May 26, 2009. (Other pilot episodes of shows included Mission: Impossible (1966 series), Walker, Texas Ranger and NCIS.) However, Barnes and Noble had it released as early as September 30, 2008.

The German release of MacGyver Season 1 on DVD also saw a "Special Limited Tool Edition" release that included MacGyver's original model Swiss Army Knife, a Victorinox, with the MacGyver logo on it!

VHS

All the MacGyver videos previously released were released to VHS format, as far as I know. That's not to say that there couldn't be any Beta video releases or maybe even Laser Discs. But all the videos below are VHS format and most are in PAL format, not NTSC, because as I've found out, MacGyver was released on video in most every other continent except North America.

Japanese Videos

Interestingly, these videos are in NTSC format. Apparently, mainly the European countries use the PAL format. The first two videos are copyrighted 1985 and in mono format. The first MacGyver video contains the Pilot episode and "The Gauntlet".

The second MacGyver video contains the episodes "The Golden Triangle" and "Last Stand".

And the MacGyver video that says "Legend of the Holy Rose" on it in English, is both parts of "Legend of the Holy Rose". ;-) This video obviously wasn't released until late 1990, probably around the same time the British and Spanish versions were released.
If you go to Japan's Amazon.co.jp site, you can find listings for what appears to be the "MacGyver" and "MacGyver 2" videos. It looks like the "MacGyver" video was released on March 21, 1987 and the "MacGyver 2" video was released on March 25, 1988. Incidentally, the MacGyver soundtrack, imported from Europe, is also listed on Japan's Amazon.co.jp site. I doubt there was a special Japanese language version though, because the whole album is pretty much instrumental.

British Videos

I know that both parts of "Legend of the Holy Rose" were released on one video in England. The "Legend of the Holy Rose" video was released in England in PAL format with a running time of 95 minutes on October 19, 1990. You can try to find it through Blackstar by doing a video hunt, as the title is out of print. There is also a listing for it at Amazon.co.uk, so it may show up there from time to time too. Here's a look at the front and back cover, in both a solid videotape box and the clamshell version.

The two TV-movies might have also been released on video in England, but I'm not sure. I have what looks like video covers for the movies pictured below. However, both "Lost Treasure of Atlantis" and "Trail to Doomsday" have been rerun a lot in England, and it turns out they seem to just be advertisements for the movies. They were part of a 2 page press release from BetaFilm for the airing of the TV-movies, containing production details, cast list and storyline on page 1 and on page 2 a composite color photo of Richard Dean Anderson as MacGyver in the film. Anyway, they still make great video covers. At one time, on Movie Gallery's Web site, a search for MacGyver brought up the two TV-movies. I don't know if that means they were released in the US, or maybe the stores had an official British version (assuming an official British version did exist), or they were taped off of TV copies. Or maybe it's just a mistake. I'm not totally sure what the deal is, but both TV-movies were listed on the site.

Spanish Videos

This is both parts of "Legend of the Holy Rose" released on video in Spanish.

Portuguese Videos

It seems "Legend of the Holy Rose" (Parts 1 and 2) was also released in Portuguese, presumably circulating in both Portugal and Brazil. The video is actually entitled "A Maior Aventura De MacGyver", which roughly translates to "The Biggest MacGyver Adventure".

German Videos

All four of these videos were released in 1987. The first "MacGyver" video has an approximate running time of 84 minutes, while the rest are 90 minutes. The German title for the first MacGyver video is "Er kämpft mit allen Tricks". That translates in English as "He fights with all tricks." The German title for "MacGyver 2" is "Der Abenteurer". That translates in English as "The Adventurer". The German title for "MacGyver 3" is "Killer-Ameisen". That's rendered in English as "Killer Ants". The German title for "MacGyver 4" is "Unternehmen 'Schwarzes Gold'". That translates in English as "Operation: 'Black Gold'".

"MacGyver" has the Pilot episode and "The Gauntlet" on it. "MacGyver 2" has "The Golden Triangle" and "Last Stand" on it. "MacGyver 3" has "Thief of Budapest" and "Trumbo's World" on it. "MacGyver 4" has "Hellfire" and "Nightmares" on it.
It looks like "Legend of the Holy Rose" (Parts 1 and 2) was also released on video in Germany, as I've seen it for sale at the zshops section of Germany's Amazon.de.

And here's the cover art! (Including both front and back cover art and the actual spine of the video tape itself.)

Here's a MacGyver film card to promote the German video releases.

French Videos

French videos are in SECAM format, by the way. From what I've found, it seems that MacGyver was released on VHS in 4 volumes on May 20, 1992, starting with this one below. It seems these videos may still be available for purchase through this site. This first video has the "Pilot" episode and "The Gauntlet" on it. (Click on the picture below for a better view.)

This next volume has "Thief of Budapest" and "Every Time She Smiles" on it. (Click on the picture below for a bigger view.)

The third MacGyver volume contains "The Heist" and "Ugly Duckling".

And then there's the fourth volume with "Legend of the Holy Rose" (Parts 1 and 2). (Click on the picture below for a better view.)

I also found five other MacGyver videos that I believe were released in France. Check out pictures of the covers at this French MacGyver web site. I'm not sure which episodes are on each video, but more than likely the episodes were picked from the first twelve episodes or so of Season One.

Here's a link to the 2002 PROMAX&BDA Europe Winners DVD available from Customflix.com. It seems to be a DVD of promotional spots, including one for MacGyver!

MacGyver Science Kit

This is a science kit designed for use in schools, grades 7-12. Students would watch clips

from MacGyver and then attempt to try out the same experiments MacGyver performed. They all worked.

MacGyver Cast and Crew Items

I'm pretty positive most all of these items were only made for the cast and crew of MacGyver. However, I believe some of these may have been given to television studios to promote the show or sold to the public through souvenir stores at Paramount Studios.

Sweatshirts

T-Shirts

This shirt would probably had to have been released after the series had ended because it lists all 139 episodes from all 7 seasons on the back of the shirt. It looks like a very cool shirt and as far as I can tell, it's an official T-shirt, probably given to the cast and crew.

Promotional T-Shirt

Shirts

Hats and Caps

There was also apparently a cap made for the crew to celebrate MacGyver's 100th. episode.

Boots

Fanny Pack

Backpack

I believe the last bag pictured was given out to the cast and crew in the celebration of the 100th. episode.

These were sent to television critics to help promote the show.

Duffle Bag

Key Chains

The next key chain has "1988-1989 season" printed on it and the one below that has "1989-1990 season" printed on it.

Mug

Pencils

I'm not sure if this is an official product or fanmade, but I'm guessing these are red pencils with the MacGyver logo on them made for the cast and crew's use.

Watches

This watch was given out to television stations to promote the premiere of MacGyver, airing on Mondays at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.

This seems to be both a MacGyver watch and compass, possibly circulated to the public in France and other European countries.

Tie Clasps/Pins

I think the vast majority of these pins were made for cast and crew use, but some may be officially licensed items available for the public too. And of course, some may just be unofficially fanmade items. The pins with the "MacGyver TM" label on them seem to be copyrighted 1992 to a presumably European company, possibly called "Beau Pins" (in English, "Beautiful Pins").

Swiss Army Knives

These Swiss Army Knives were issued in celebration of "Deep Cover", the 100th. episode of MacGyver, to the cast and crew. Check out MacGyver Online's great page on this knife for more pictures and information.

Autographed Swiss Army Knife

This is a Swiss Army Knife with Richard Dean Anderson's autograph.

Placards

These were given out to cast and crew to put on the dashboard of their vehicles when out on location.

MacGyver 100th. episode party invitation

This is an invitation to a celebration party for MacGyver's 100th. episode (which was "Deep Cover", by the way).

MacGyver Props

These banners were given out to extras to wave in

the audience at the ice hockey game in the episode "Thin Ice".

This is a hammer used in various episodes of MacGyver.

Here's some pictures of a Hank Aaron autographed baseball from the "Squeeze Play" episode (in which Hank Aaron guest-starred!)

These are pictures of the original architectural rendering of the "Eye of Osiris" medallion prop, dated and signed by MacGyver's production designer, and used, of course, in the episode, "Eye of Osiris".

This is the heavy gold resin death mask of Alexander the Great used in the tomb set of the 6th. season episode, "Eye of Osiris".

Here is the heavy gold resin shield of Alexander the Great used in the tomb set of the 6th. season episode, "Eye of Osiris". It is about 3.5 feet in diameter.

Here are some pictures of the Ark of Solon prop used in the 1994 TV-Movie "MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis".

Here are props bearing the Phoenix Foundation logo, including a telephone book listing, letterhead and stationery.

This is the prop flag created for the fictional country of Kambala, as seen in the "Brainwashed" episode.

Here are some shots of the prop musket created for the "Good Knight, MacGyver" (Parts 1 and 2) episodes.

This looks like a storyboard painting done for an opening scene in the "Kill Zone" episode, when we see the satellite crash site that MacGyver has gone to investigate. It's labelled "Scene 65 Satellite Crash Site" and is painted by Ken Rabehl. It's signed and dated 1987.

MacGyver Director's Chair

These were given to the cast and crew in the late 1980s as Christmas gifts.

MacGyver Food Products

There was apparently a MacGyver bubble gum, which came with stickers. This was marketed most likely throughout Europe. and I believe the pictures linked below are from a release in France. The stickers included probably varied from country to country. For example, in Belgium there were stickers that included instructions on how to perform various little "MacGyverisms" (though not necessarily ones seen on the show.) See this thread from the MacGyver Online forum for more details. This may have just been a special promotion for a certain brand, or it may have been a special individual MacGyver bubble gum brand. Check out pictures of it here.

Danone, a European company (I believe it's another French company), had a MacGyver promotion with their fruit snacks and puddings. Check out the pictures here.

MacGyver Background Guide

There have been a number of these floating around on Ebay for a while now. It is a 45 page booklet of stapled computer printouts, detailing MacGyver's background, Pete's background, and how they met. There is also a rundown of six MacGyver episodes, with notes on MacGyverisms for the episode. This may be unproduced episodes, though some sound like precursors to episodes that did air. As the seller notes, this is an unofficial production, so I am not sure exactly where this comes from. Perhaps this is from a MacGyver writer, who's selling the background notes they received when working on the show, as well as some notes on episodes they were working on. I really can't say for sure. Visit MacGyver Online to see the synopses and backgrounds.
